I’m an Approved Driving Instructor

Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs) are required to renew their Enhanced DBS check every four years, in line with their ADI registration cycle.

DVSA will send ADIs a notification six months before the registration expires with instructions on how to apply. If you do not receive this letter within five months of expiry, contact the DVSA.​

If the DVSA has an email address on file for you, you will also receive an email from CBS with instructions on how to complete your Enhanced Disclosure request.​

Please note, if any of the below apply you should apply to DVSA before obtaining your disclosure certificate:​

• ​If you have any endorsements, including disqualifications​
• If you have five or more fixed penalty points on your driving licence​
• If you are restricted to drive vehicles with automatic transmission due to a disability​
• If you have not held a full UK or EU licence for four out of the last six years

An IDSP (Identity Service Provider) is a certified digital service that checks and verifies someone’s identity securely. For Criminal Record Checks, an IDSP allows you to confirm your identity online rather than in person, making the process quicker and more convenient.

Yoti is a trusted and government-certified Identity Service Provider. They use secure technology to verify identities digitally by checking official photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence. Yoti is widely used across the UK and meets all DVSA and DBS identity-checking requirements.

To give yourself the best chance of passing the Digital ID check:​

• Use a valid, in-date passport or photocard driving licence
• Make sure your document is clear and undamaged​
• Take photos in good lighting with no glare or shadows​
• Follow Yoti’s on-screen instructions carefully​
• Ensure your personal details match exactly with your application

If you’re unable to complete the Digital ID check through Yoti, don’t worry. You’ll have the option to verify your identity in person at a Post Office.
